Pole Dance Instruction at the Joy Emporium

I am passionate about pole dance as a therapeutic healing modality that I want to share with you. Embodied sensual movement is transformative and ignites the heart. Pole dance is for every body. As a bodyworker of fourteen years I can quickly modify instructions to meet your needs.

Group Classes

Learn pole dancing in an art gallery. These one hour and fifteen minute classes start with a thorough warm up before we dive into the curated curriculum. I teach you a blueprint and encourage you to make the movements your own. Near the end is freestyle playtime. We end with some stretches and rest. Class size is limited to three students to ensure you get plenty of individual attention. Exchange is $25 per class

Beginning Flow

Every Tuesday from 6:30-7:45 we condition pole climbing, sits, shapes and transitions. This class assists you in diving right in to find your flow and connect the movements.

Embodiment Flow/Static Low Flow

Every Wednesday from 6:30-7:45 I create a new choreography on static pole that we learn step by step. Its a memory game where we pretend we are painting the floor with our toes as we slide around in socks. There’s something magical about studying moments this way that allows the mind to be occupied so the body can let go. We freestyle at the end to a couple of different songs so you can really make the choreo your own.

Inversion Flow Lab

Every other Thursday from 6:30-7:45 we play with a series of inversions and focus on finding new shapes and transitions within the movements. Exploring contact points and prompts to inspire.

Floorwork

Explore floor space and how many ways we can slither across space. I do not know why we ever stopped crawling. Every other Sunday evening we gather for 90 minutes and start with a thorough warm up followed by conditioning moves that can be used for choreo. I choose a theme and create movements dedicated to specific body parts or elements. There is an emphasis on curiosity and finding your unique rhythm inside of a community container. As always I am simply offering a blueprint of movements. Each of us has a unique anatomy and you are your own bodies best authority. I am here to curate a container and inspiration with which you can rediscover play.

Yoga

These classes have an emphasis on strength/flexibility, fascia, mobility and breath work. These classes are ideal for anyone wanting to increase fluidity of movement and deepen their relationship with their body. Each class has a themed focus. You can expect sensual movement, space to feel into your emotions, some sweat and closing with some deep rest. We use the pole a prop which opens up accessibility. I am YTT trained and certified. The focus of my studies are all about safe alignment, student autonomy and trauma informed. I like to say that my classes are Yogaish since what is practiced currently is generally far from Yogas origins. I have been practicing Yoga for thirty years in many forms. Asana is one small fraction of Yoga. I do believe turning our focus on our physical bodies, getting to know them and tending to their unique needs amplifies our awareness and compassion for fellow humans, creatures and environment.

Private and semi private classes

Individual private-$55 Two friends $77 Three friends $88 per hour

What to expect at a private/semi private class. Each class starts with a thorough warm up and conditioning. Next we focus on learning moves that cater to your personal goals. There is freestyle time at the end of class. This gives you time to get out of your head and play with what you’ve learned and allow your body to integrate and celebrate. We end with a some stretches and any questions or feelings that may have come up during class. As a bodyworker and YTT certified I am aware of the importance of proper alignment, individual range of motion and have the ability and experience to modify for the individual. I can help modify for past injuries, autoimmune and chronic pain conditions. I work with people all ages, younger and older than me(I am 48) My goal is for you to fall in love with pole dance and create sustainable habits to be able to dance for years to come.

I’ve started taking privates at The Joy Emporium and have seen an immediate improvement in my specific goals. Joy is kind, understanding of the seasons of the body, and sex-worker friendly. I recommend booking privates with her if you want to find different entryways that work for your body and work on personal goals. The space is also warm, inviting and beautiful and makes you wanna dance! -SG

Joy creates a safe container in which to explore movement, play, sensuality, and connection. I left the series with more confidence and a greater connection to myself and my body.

Philosophy

Each of our anatomy is entirely unique like our fingerprints. I teach the blueprint of a movement, confident that you will make that movement your own. Our bodies and psyche hold the key to an inner library that gives us access to knowledge of the entire universe- past, present and future. By connecting to our breath and feeling into every cell of our bodies we can embody our life’s fullest expression. Many people have experienced trauma and cultural conditioning that often leads to a shut down or numbness to the body and disconnect from the mind/body connection. My intention is for you to have a safe space to explore and experience your own body. These movements have been passed down for millennia through practitioners of the sensual arts. They are movements intended to heal, amplify joy and engage pleasure. Feeling safe, confident and sensual in our body is in direct defiance of the capitalist narrative. It is an active practice with some days being easier than others. Studying the connection of movements and choreography allows the mind to quiet the endless chatter and create new neural pathways. When studying movement we step off the super highway our brain usually uses and fire our neural network in whole new ways, increasing neuroplasicity.

In my own personal dance practice I dive deep into the abyss of my psyche. The river of pain, grief and solitude. What I extract is incredible states of ecstasy which allows me to show up for my various works of service and to create art. This is how we create peace in community. I am ever so honored to go on this journey of dance with you.
